Hey Gang!

We had our Coaches Fall Retreat! I work with the very best coaches EVER! This year will be very magical and special--count on it.

Exciting news to report, but will have to wait just a little bit more until I can tell everyone.

Hey Gang!

Hard to believe that another season is right around the corner! I am so jazzed to begin this season. We had an amazing summer, and now I am hoping for bigger and better things. A couple of random thoughts...

1. Mrs. Fritz has coached a National Champion, National Runner-Up, 3rd Place at Nationals and 4th Place at Nationals (in a round-about way). No Montana coach can claim this sort of success--ever. Don't ever underestimate the type of coach Fritz is! The sky is the limit. I'm blessed to have coached most of my career with her!

2. I've coached nine AA State Championship teams, and have been involved in three other teams. I'm ready to coach my 10th!

3. I can't believe that the Class of 2010 will be seniors now! It seems like yesterday that you guys were 9th graders at KJHS!

4. I'm SO excited that our entire coaching staff will be returning in the same roles as last season. The consistency will pay off...

5. Besides a handful of transfer students, no GHS student ever attended FHS. This will be a monumental change...

6. I have been amazed at how many of you have told me on Facebook, email, or in person that you are already working on your events, speeches, etc.

7. We will have the latest season start in Montana history. Halloween will be the date of the Kalispell Kick-Off!

8. I think Flathead, Bozeman, Sentinel and Glacier will once again battle for the trophies.

9. We need to recruit some new members--and our graduates will always be part of our program!

10. I'm proud that Matt Schwager will represent Wolfpack Speech & Debate (and Megan will represent Wolfpack Theatre) on the GHS Wall of Fame!

I am gaining excitement for this season everyday! Even as I am enjoying family vacations, Glacier National Park, Atlanta Braves baseball and the Brett Favre watch, I catch myself getting more and more anxious for the upcoming season--a season which will be undoubtedly be REMARKABLE.

When the dust settled, Bozeman beats us by 2.5 points in Missoula. Hopefully this can be the incentive we need to get (and be) better. On closer inspection, check out the top four teams--we are in for a battle with Bozeman, Sentinel and our friends at Flathead.
Our Debate squads pulled us through in Missoula...Now we need the full balanced attack!

Missoula will be largest invitational tournament of the season. Please double-check with your coach regarding travel rosters...

For those JV students who either finished their season on Saturday in Whitefish or will finish their season in Missoula this season, I hope you found the Wolfpack Speech & Debate team to be a worthwhile and rewarding activity.

Those students who will compete for a slot on the Wolfpack State team will be notified before Christmas.

The Pack is Back!

Thanks for everything. This weekend was very special and amazing. By scoring 177.5 points, we easily set another GHS record for most points scored at AA tournament. Winning three events this weekend, was one more event than we won all of last year. Another amazing weekend for Abby, Dylan, Matt, Kyle, Ariel and John.
More students contributed to our total points, more students earned "stage" time, and we handled everything with grace.
All that being said, I know we can better. I trust you believe it too.
We will be splitting our squad with some "varsity" going to Helena and some "varsity/jv" going to Whitefish after Thanksgiving. Because the Helena tournament is co-hosted by Helena High and Carroll College, our travel roster is actually a bit smaller than usual--no matter what team you travel with, please approach the weekend as a chance to get better.
The following weekend we will take a larger team to Missoula. After the Whitefish and Missoula tournaments, our 2008-09 JV season will be over. Make sure you check in with your coaches before we break for Thanksgiving...Changes are on the horizon.

Great Falls was a humbling experience...To defeat the likes of Sentinel, Bozeman and Flathead we ALL have to be on stage at the end. While we had some topdog performances (Mary, Matt, Abby, Justine, and Dylan) we need more people on Stage during the awards assembly. Too many wholes...Too many people watching awards, rather than getting up on the stage.
My job is too convince you that DREAMS AND DEDICATION ARE A POWERFUL COMBINATION and we can compete at the elite level!!!

We are going to get there...It is all part of the process.

Take ownership in your own process this week. The coaches will be busy and perhaps even overwhelmed. Help each other get better...Make it happen.

HEADING TO GREAT FALLS

I am encouraged by our performance at Polson. Scoring 97 points up against the likes of Columbia Falls, Loyola, Flathead, Whitefish and others is an accomplishment!
This is a tough week. While I am proud of the growth of our team, it is hard to leave students off a the bus who have been working hard and performing well. Members of the 2008 State AA team won't be on the bus this weekend for the first time in their two-year careers.
If you did not make the varsity bus for Great Falls--keep your chin up. The season is early. If you did make the varsity bus for Great Falls, congrats and keep working hard. The pressure is on...We intend to keep improving.

Don't let each other down! Our judges are due on Tuesday, November 4th at 3:30 pm. Please see Mrs. Fritz in E110. I know that this can be a a bit of hassle, but WE NEED YOUR HELP, and your teammates are counting on you. Let's get it done, so we can focus on practice and our tournament prep.
Doesn't it seem like we competed months ago? It will be good to travel to Polson and Great Falls over the next couple of weeks.

Our 1st Major Tourney Trophy!

Goal #2. Our goal is to be in the trophy hunt every tournament, and at the Bulldog Invitational we not only captured another trophy, but were within striking distance of Bozeman. I'm excited about our depth and our improvements. We still need to keep up the pressure, especially in the Saturday afternoon rounds.
Everyone has the will to win at tournaments...Do we have the will to win at practice.

I'm not sure anyone is reading or checking the website or the blog, but I apologize for it's lack of activity. We are having some issues with the school filter/blocker and I still don't have full access at school. I hope we are getting it resolved.
I have also tried to simplify our site now that we are into the tournament mode. Please let me know if some links are not working.
So what do I say? The Kalispell Kick-Off was a major accomplishment for our program. We set a goal to come out swinging and won round 1 in the fifteen round bout. Like in any great boxing match, we will get hit, and maybe even knocked down. We need to remember to prepare to be judged the winner win the fight is over. But really, HOLY COW! Saturday, October 11th, 2008 will always hold a special place in my book of memories and accomplishments.
We will continue to grow and we will continue learn as we move into the AA season. I love this team, our depth, our new recruits, and our future...Keeping it rolling.
And off to Butte, America.

HOMECOMING WEEK

This past week I was overwhelmed by the WOLFPACK SPIRIT during Homecoming week. It was a great week with dress-up days, assembly, dance and activities. We have arrived as a school.

And how about, MEGAN LEININGER and DYLAN RODWICK? Your 2008 Homecoming Queen and King!!! Glacier Wolfpack Speech & Debate well represented!

What did underwhelm me was the final results at the end of the week. Besides the Theatre Production on Monday, and the Wolfpack girls soccer victory over Sentinel, the GHS varsity teams fell short of goals and expectations this week. Whether it was because of distractions, or something else, I hope we can learn something from the dissapointments of the week.

Dreams and Dedication are a powerful combination? In regards to Wolfpack Speech & Debate, what are you dreams? How dedicated are you? Are we ready to raise the bar and become a State AA leader? It's our choice...

Wolfpack Football!

You may have wondered why I was on the sideline at Saturday night's Wolfpack football game. I was honored to be a "guest coach". Brock and I attended all of the Saturday night team meetings and Brock served as the "ball boy". The evening was amazing, and despite the dissapointing loss, I was impressed with our program and proud to be a member of TEAM GLACIER. I was reminded on how much we all have in common--whether you play football, debate nuclear energy, cheer, or play in the band. Thanks to Mr. Bennett and the Wolfpack program. It was honor and a blast. Go Wolfpack!

PAY YOUR FEES!

PAY YOUR ACTIVITY FEES:There is a $40 dollar fee (Speech/Theatre) for the first activity. This fee includes an activity ticket, which will allow admission into regular season athletic contests. GHS encourages students to pay for their first activity fee at the beginning of the school year to ensure that they receive the full benefit of their first activity fee. Students will incur an additional $30 fee for each MHSA activity that he or she participates in. There is a family cap of $170. Assistance for students who are unable to pay for these fees is available. It is a priority in our district that as many students participate in activities as possible. If these fees are an obstacle for you to participate, please speak with your coach, counselor, or the activities director to waive these fees. These fees must be paid or other arrangments made before an athlete may participate in their first contest. Don't forget your optional Spirit Pack (t-shirt & hoody) Fee for $25.

This is the getting to be the time we lose some kids in the chaos of beginning practice. I hope we can all reach out and grab tight to any students that may be slipping away...

It looks like we have a zillion interpers with need for short prep, novice policy debaters, and some MPAers. We need everyone to compete at the KICK-OFF!!!
